Hoku Lio Farms is a place to reconnect with yourself in nature.

About

Hoku Lio Farms is a place to reconnect with yourself and nature. We provide a holistic educational environment where people and animals can safely interact, and through their mutual therapeutic experiences broaden the scope of their lives. We are developing a farm using the principles of biodynamic farming and permaculture that provides food and opportunities to care for the land in a mutually beneficial way.

The horses who live here at the farm offer the gift of their loving presence. Some guests keep their feet on the ground and sit quietly with the horses. Others brush and care for the horses with loving hands and kind hearts. As we care for the horses, we feel the healing of caring for ourselves. Traumas and fears are loosened and released and replaced with love, kindness and gentle touch. Over time, clarity, confidence and connection grows. Once the relationship with the horse is growing, riding may be added giving the opportunity to practice navigating a new relationship, learning a new language based on respect and cooperation.

Our Farm lives and breathes and sustains life; the lives of the plants, bees, butterflies and beasts, as well as the lives of all who come to experience its wonders. The farm is the healing vessel that holds the space of peace and healing for all. Its beauty nourishes at a soul level to help counter balance the deep challenges of these times. Come join with us to find your star and what makes your heart sing.

Hoku Lio Farms Horsemanship Program

There are many documented benefits of equine activities and riding, but the most important one here at Hoku Lio Farms is the benefit of the relationships formed when two beings meet to do something together.  We reach out and touch the horse, whether to brush, or to mount, or just to say hello.  By doing so, we are also touched. In this moment, a relationship is kindled.  This is the foundation of the riding experience. We experience the horse as the true instructor, with the human instructors being there to make a dialog possible.  As this progresses, the relationship progresses.  Through ups and downs the student learns tolerance, self-motivation, decision making skills, control, confidence, conflict-resolution, working with emotions, and many other life lessons.  And always with a partner that doesn’t judge at all in the sense of cleverness, prettiness, how well liked one is… the only concern there is is to be safe and comfortable with one another, and to make sense of the situation.  And the hardest lesson of course: to be true to ones feelings and to oneself.  In this sense, riding is therapeutic for every being.

In our eyes at Hoku Lio, there is also the soul connection that has to be taken into account. This may be the single most important aspect for us here to continue our horsemanship programs to let the soul glow and evolve freely and compassionately. It is in this work that the human and the animal grow as beings together and conquer the restrictions that life and the world has put on them individually.  This is the growth we look for, the therapeutic aspect of riding that touches everyone, whether or not they are “labeled” as needing therapy or not.  The horses and other participants do not care what the issues are that bring the “client” to the barn.  Everyone is there to learn and do the best they can and want to do..

Hoku Lio Farms is an 501(c)(3) organization.
